Shopping center getting a makeover.
A north side shopping center anchored by a Piggly Wiggly supermarket has been sold to a group that plans to expand the property to accommodate a new fitness center.
The 90,000-square-foot shopping center, 709-733 E. Capitol Drive, was sold to PJR Properties LLC for $3.85 million, according to state real estate records posted Thursday.
PJR’s registered agent is Michael Isken, chief financial officer at Sheboygan-based Piggly Wiggly Midwest LLC, which franchises the Piggly Wiggly brand in Wisconsin and elsewhere. Piggly Wiggly Midwest supplies 107 corporate-owned and franchised Piggly Wiggly supermarkets in Wisconsin and northern Illinois, as well as 10 Butera Market stores and two Eurofresh stores in the Chicago area.
PJR Properties is remodeling the shopping center’s Piggly Wiggly, which closed in January and will reopen in early summer, said Gary Suokko, Piggly Wiggly Midwest chief operating officer.
A small addition on the shopping center’s west side will help accommodate a new 20,000-square-foot Planet Fitness, which is to open by September, Suokko said. Planet Fitness also will use space formerly used by the supermarket, which will be smaller once the remodeling is done, he said.
The shopping center’s other tenants are Citi Trends and Fallas, formerly known as CW Price. Both are lower-priced clothing store chains.
The shopping center’s seller was 709 E. Capitol LLC, which lists Derrick Martin as its registered agent. The Martin family operated the E. Capitol Drive Piggly Wiggly, but the reopened store will have a new operator, Suokko said.
The Martin family also operates Lena’s supermarkets at 2322 W. Oak St., 4030 N. Teutonia Ave., 4061 N. 54th St. and 4623 W. Burleigh St.
