UWM men win Horizon track title

The Uw-milwaukee men’s team came up with a Hollywood ending at the Horizon League outdoor track and field championships Sunday in Rochester, Mich.
UWM, which entered the day 35 points behind Youngstown State, claimed its 11th title in 12 years by winning the final event of the meet — the 1,600-meter relay.
Jordan Schmidt, Kyle Becker, Davontae Johnson and Marquis Johnson combined to win the event going away in 3 minutes, 17.73 seconds. The team’s victory capped a day in which the Panthers won seven events.
The Panthers finished with 184 points. Youngstown State was second with 178 points.
In the penultimate event, UWM’S Marcus Paulson won the 5,000-meters in 15:00.58. Paulson charged out of the gates and never trailed, giving UWM its first title in the event.
The UWM women’s team almost staged a dramatic comeback of their own. The Panthers won five individual titles before settling for second place.
UWM entered the day with 34 points for fifth place trailing by 55 points and finished it with 148 points for second overall. Youngstown State was able to escape with the league title with 156 points.
Michelle Garner shattered the school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.10 for her second-straight league title in the event.
BASEBALL
Daulton Varsho socked a two-run homer in the ninth to help UWM turn back host Valparaiso, 8-6.
