BASKETBALL

-

Brittney Griner opted out of the U.S. women’s national basketball team training camp that began Monday.

The 6-foot-8 star of the Phoenix Mercury was arrested April 22 on suspicion of assault after a fight with her fiancée, fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson. Griner, who was expected to be one of the 27 players at the camp, let USA Basketball know of her choice over the weekend.

Griner entered into a diversion agreement, where she will plead guilty to disorderly conduct and attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling. All charges will be dismissed if she completes her counseling.

The WBNA is still investigating the incident. The league has the option to fine, suspend or even terminate the contracts of Griner and Johnson.

Sergei Plotnikov cut it to 3-2 when the puck deflected into the goal off defenseman Seth Jones’ stick with 3 minutes 49 seconds to go, but Brock Nelson scored into an empty net with 9 seconds left.
