— Vice President Joe Biden announced Saturday that his son, Beau, a member of the National Guard who served in Iraq and a former Delaware attorney general, had died of brain cancer. He was 46.

Beau Biden, who was hospitalized this month at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, had suffered a mild stroke in 2010 and had surgery at a Texas cancer center in 2013 to remove what was described as a small lesion.

He announced last year that he would not seek a third term as attorney general and planned to run for governor in 2016.

A statement from the vice president on Saturday said Beau “battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life. The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words. We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us, especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children.”

President Barack Obama said, “Michelle and I humbly pray for the good Lord to watch over Beau Biden and to protect and comfort his family here on Earth.”

The death of the eldest of his three children is the latest personal tragedy to befall the vice president, whose wife and infant daughter were killed in a car accident just a month after he was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972. Beau and his brother, Hunter, were seriously injured in the crash.
