Struggling Reavie grabs lead with 63

-

Pebble Beach, Calif. — Chez Reavie enjoyed the pure weather almost as much as watching putts go in. He opened with an 8-under 63 at to take the lead Thursday after one round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Reavie made an eagle on the 16th hole and shot 8-under 63 at Monterey Peninsula, which played just more than 11⁄ strokes under par and was the easiest of the three courses.

Golf has been a grind for Reavie since he missed nearly all of 2014 because of surgery on his left wrist and had to return to the Web.com Tour Finals last year just to get his PGA Tour card back.

“Even on days I putt well, I still don’t make as many putts as I made today,” Reavie said.

Cameron Smith of Australia and Bronson Burgoon each had a 7-under 64 at Monterey Peninsula.

Freddie Jacobson made five birdies in a six-hole stretch and shot 7-under 65 at Pebble Beach, the only course to play over par (72.06) on Thursday.

Some of the biggest stars had to settle for simply enjoying the sunshine.

Jordan Spieth struggled with his short game — typically a strength — and opened with a 71 at Spyglass Hill.

Jason Day also had a 71 at Spyglass, while Bubba Watson opened with a 73.

Justin Rose had a 66 to join J.B. Holmes with the best score at Spyglass.

Rose’s partner in the event is singer Justin Timberlake.

“I’ve never seen a demographic like that on a golf course where you’re sort of running the gauntlet from one tee to the other. Everyone was under 21 and 80% female,” Rose said. “I said, ‘OK, that moved the needle a little bit there.’ ”

Phil Mickelson had a 68 while playing with a different setup in his driver that he regretted changing.

Jerry Kelly of Madison, Wis., who is playing with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, opened up with a 71 at Spyglass. The duo was tied for 12th in the pro-am at 8-under.

Steve Stricker of Madison had a 72 at Spyglass.

Stricker and singer Toby Keith were tied for 132nd at 1under.
