Palestinian killed after attack on soldier
Jerusalem — A knifewielding Palestinian woman attacked an Israeli soldier on guard near a sensitive West Bank holy site sacred to both Jews and Muslims on Saturday, wounding him and a Palestinian bystander before she was shot and killed by Israeli troops, the military said.
The stabbing incident occurred in Hebron, a flashpoint during the last five months of violence, in which Palestinians have carried out near-daily attacks, mainly stabbings.
The soldier was lightly wounded. A Palestinian who intervened to try to stop the attacker was stabbed and more seriously wounded.
About 850 Israeli settlers live in heavily guarded enclaves in Hebron, surrounded by tens of thousands of Palestinians. Much of the animosity in the biblical city is over a holy site known to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque.
2 soldiers, 5 rebels killed in Kashmir
Srinagar, India — Five suspected rebels and two soldiers were killed in a fierce gunbattle Saturday in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, officials said.
The area where the fighting took place is close to the Line of Control dividing Kashmir between India and Pakistan. The Himalayan region is divided between the rivals, but both claim it in its entirety.
More than a dozen rebel groups have been fighting in Kashmir since an insurgency erupted in 1989.
India and Pakistan have fought two wars over control of Kashmir since they won independence from Britain in 1947.
Gunmen kill police in Pakistani capital
Islamabad — Pakistani police said Saturday that two gunmen shot and killed a police officer and wounded two others in an attack on a patrol on a main road in the capital, Islamabad.
Police officer Tariq Javed said the two gunmen escaped on foot after the shooting late Friday on a busy road linking Islamabad to its twin city, Rawalpindi.
A local affiliate of the Islamic State group claimed the attack in a statement circulated online by supporters.
But Javed said police have no indication that the group was involved. Pakistan denies the existence of any Islamic State affiliate on its soil, saying militants invoke the group’s name to sow fear.
