AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

-

Chicago White Sox (Glendale, Ariz.)

The White Sox have made changes in their starting infield by acquiring Brett Lawrie from Oakland to play second base and Todd Frazier from Cincinnati at third, to go with evolving shortstop Tony Saladino. There’s also a new catcher with Alex Avila, the former starter in Detroit. Mat Latos was added at the back end of a solid rotation led by Chris Sale.

Cleveland Indians (Goodyear, Ariz.)

Leftfielder Michael Brantley probably won’t be recovered from shoulder surgery in time for the start of the season, so the Indians must figure out what to do there. Mike Napoli, signed to a one-year deal to play first base, must show he has something left, and catcher Yan Gomes looks to bounce back from an injury-riddled season.

Detroit Tigers (Lakeland, Fla.)

A troublesome knee robbed DH Victor Martinez of much of his power and the Tigers look for him to bounce back in a big way. An ailing shoulder also made pitcher Anibal Sanchez homer-prone and getting him back on top of his game is important. The outfield has been rebuilt with Justin Upton in left and prodigal son Cameron Maybin in center.

Kansas City Royals (Surprise, Ariz.)

The big move by the defending World Series champions over the off-season was keeping free agent Alex Gordon, a team leader, from bolting to another club. The Royals are counting on Ian Kennedy to bounce back from an off year in San Diego and bolster an already solid starting rotation.

Minnesota Twins (Fort Myers, Fla.)

The Twins hope Byung Ho Park, a star in Korea, can hit enough to man the designated hitter role. And it certainly wouldn’t hurt if Joe Mauer returned to the offensive force he once was. Right-hander Ricky Nolasco needs to stay healthy and productive, something he didn’t do in 2015.
