Falls, Tosa, Pewaukee earn spots in WIAA team wrestling sectionals

Menomonee Falls is in position for another berth in the WIAA state team wrestling tournament.

The Indians won the regional title at Falls on Saturday to advance to the sectional. They will face Wauwatosa at 7 p.m Tuesday at Cedarburg for the right to advance to state for the third time in four years.

To advance, Falls edged North Shore tournament champion Germantown, 217209.

The Indians did the job in the lower weights, where Austin Lasanske (113 pounds), Eric Wunsch (120) and Jerott Holz (126) won titles. They also fared well in the upper weights as Nate Fuiten (182) and Brandon Schaefer (195) claimed championsh­ips. The team also scored some key victories over Germantown

head-to-head as Lasanske, Holz and Fuiten defeated Warhawks on the way to winning their titles.

Nicolet Regional: Defending Division 1 126-pound state champion Justin Folley cruised to two victories in his weight class to lead Wauwatosa into the sectional. He finished the day tied for the most points of the meet (26) with a handful of competitor­s that included teammates Norberto Pliego (170) and Lawrence Thomas (195).

Brookfield Central Regional: Pewaukee advanced to the team sectional. First-place finishers for the Pirates were Eric Halverson (120), Brandon Berg (182), Jacob Raschka (195), Austin Shibilski (220), and Blaze Beltran (285).

Kenosha Bradford Regional: Bradford/Reuther edged Kenosha Tremper, 245.5-226. Helping the victory was heavyweigh­t Jesus Vega, who defeated Tremper’s Joe Carravetta, 5-1, in the final. Bradford also won head-to-head battles at 120, where Tyler Hansen defeated Avry Nichols in the semifinals, and at 182, where Oscar Ramos pinned Tyler Cunningham in the semifinals.

South Milwaukee Regional:

Oak Creek dominated, winning seven weight classes and taking second four times.

Division 2

Big Foot Regional: Wisconsin Lutheran finished with 314.5 points, well ahead of second-place East Troy (176). Ten Vikings brought home regional titles. Lucas Roecker (113), Ian Wirtz (182) and Quinton Reed (285) tied for the team high in points with 26.

Division 3

Kenosha Christian Life Regional: The host Eagles finished with 107 more points than second-place Shoreland Lutheran. Ten of their wrestlers were regional champions.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Greenfield Co-op Sectional:

Sophomore Conrad Farrell led Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial to the title with four first-place finishers. He won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in 22.02 and 47.74 seconds, then swam the opening legs of the team’s 200 and 400 free relays that won in 1 minute 29.16 seconds and 3:14.66.

Each sectional winner automatica­lly advanced to state followed by the next-best 18

times in Division 1 and nextbest 12 times in Division 2.

Greenfield senior Ricky Davis automatica­lly qualified in two individual events thanks to first-place finishes in the 200 individual medley (1:57.13) and 100 backstroke (53.17).

Kenosha Bradford/Reuther

Sectional: In Division 1, Franklin won the team title with the help of junior D.J. Nowacki, a winner in the 200 and 500 free as well as the 200 and 400 free relays. Bradford senior Ivar Iverson continued to have strong showings in the 100 breaststro­ke (56.98) and the 100 butterfly (49.82).

Whitefish Bay Sectional: In Division 2, Shorewood senior Michael Perry won the 200 free in 1:43.80, the 100 fly (51.69) and 400 free relay to lead the Greyhounds to the sectional crown.

Plymouth Sectional: Grafton edged North Shore rival Cedarburg by 12 points for the title.

Grafton’s Sean O’Connor won the 100 fly (50.80), 200 free (1:44.48) and the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

GYMNASTICS

Nordy Invite: Franklin-Combined and Kenosha were the class of the field with Franklin finishing with a 146.850 score and Kenosha totaling14­6.7450.

Mukwonago/Kettle Moraine senior Lauren Reese edged Franklin’s Sam Balcerczak and Krystal Nelson for the all-around title.

Robert Bradley Invite: Arrowhead edged host Whitefish Bay, 142.1750-142.1500, for the team title.

Bay’s Aly Yurkowitz took the all-around title.
