THREE THINGS TO WATCH
Sensational Cervantes: Catholic Memorial senior forward Emily Cervantes has an outside chance to break the state record for goals scored and total points in a career. Cervantes, a Tennessee recruit, ranks third in career points with 330, behind Ozaukee’s Ashley Bares (505) and Waunakee’s Heather Willihnganz (344). Cervantes also ranks third in career goals (147) behind Bares (224) and Willihnganz (158). While passing Bares in both categories could be tough, remember that Cervantes scored 66 goals and had 152 points as a sophomore. If she increased those totals slightly this spring, she could move atop the record book in both categories. Cervantes has posted those numbers despite missing much of the 2015 season with a torn meniscus.
Double trouble: Waukesha West senior striker Dani Rhodes, a Wisconsin recruit, won the Gatorade state player of the year award and shared the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association state player of the year honors in 2015. Rhodes also holds the school record for career goals after just three seasons. West senior Nat Yass, a Northern Illinois recruit, is just three assists away from the Wolverines’ career record. This dynamic duo has done almost everything except win a WIAA Division 2 state title. Could 2016 be the year?
Star-studded Dashers: DSHA’s Amanda Durst (Loyola), Olivia Myszewski (Quinnipiac) and Kelly Reilley (St. Thomas) will all play collegiately. The Dashers have won three Division 1 state titles since 2008 under head coach Kevin Roethe. This group might have what it takes for a fourth.
