Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday signed Assembly Bill 700 into law, establishing the first Saturday in November as the opening of Wisconsin wolf hunting and trapping seasons.
When the Legislature and Walker passed the initial law in 2012, it started the season Oct. 15, a date opposed by many trappers and upland bird hunters. Wolf pelts are not prime in mid-October, lowering their value and appeal to hunters and trappers, and the period is often peak for ruffed grouse and other hunters with dogs who were concerned about encountering traps.
Wolves in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota are protected under the Endangered Species Act; the law would come into play if the species is returned to state management.
