A few miles north of Fischer Creek, the 39-acre Point Creek Conservation Area also protects a stretch of bluffs along Lake Michigan.

The small park is less developed than Fischer Creek, with rustic trails winding through pines along the bluff-top and a small open area for birding.

A short but steep trail from there leads to a sandy beach.

Access the area along County LS (Lakeshore Drive), and follow a trail along the property’s western boundary to the birdwatching area.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, follow a faint trail from the parking lot’s southeastern corner to the bluffs, then hike a rustic trail up and down along them.

The site’s wetlands live up to their name in the spring — the area between the parking lot and the bluffs was flooded on a recent visit.

On your way back to Milwaukee, continue your bluff binge at Lion’s Den Gorge, on High Bluff Drive just east of Grafton in Ozaukee County. The wide and well-maintained trails there afford views of the lake from 100-foot bluffs, plus the deep ravine that gives the area its name.

A series of steps also provides access to a rocky beach area.

Fuel up after your hike at Maretti’s at 823 Buffalo St. in Manitowoc. Sandwiches from the Italian deli are made with soft sub buns baked fresh in-house daily. Other offerings include soups, salads and pizza. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

There are some low (read: wet) spots throughout the park, made extra dirty in the spring. Wear shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a little muddy.

Dogs are allowed at Fischer Creek, but they must be leashed. For more information, see manitowoc-county.com.
