NOTABLE

Wrestler of the week: Shane Gantz, Waukesha West. The senior went 5-0 at the Mid-States Classic to win the 152pound weight class. The championship improved Gantz’ record to 13-0 this season. Gantz is currently ranked No. 3 in Division 1 at 152, and he defeated a pair of top-10 ranked wrestlers on his way to the title. In the final, Gantz defeated No. 10-ranked Elkhorn senior Bryce Jackson (17-2) by a 7-2 decision. In the quarterfinals, Gantz defeated No. 4-ranked Kenosha Tremper senior Noah Jackson (28-1) by a 4-3 decision in two overtimes. Last year, Gantz finished sixth at the state tournament at 152 in Division 1 with a record of 34-7 in his first trip to Madison. Team of the week: New

Berlin Eisenhower/West. The combined team turned in its best performance since 2011 at the Northern Exposure in Merrill's 20-team dual meet tournament over the holidays. New Berlin finished second in the Blue Division with a 6-1 record to improve to 14-1 overall. New Berlin was led by five wrestlers: sophomore Tony Scaffidi (132), junior Peter Katris (138), junior Mike Baumann (145) junior Jake Belongia (182) and senior Jaron Radisch (195). Belongia and Radisch went 7-0 on the day while the others went 6-1. New Berlin last wrestled this well at the E.H. Stech tournament in 2011 when the team finished second. Of note, New Berlin knocked off Port Washington, 35-27, and Beaver Dam, 37-34. “Our kids took their lumps the past couple of years, but this is where we thought we could get to,” said New Berlin coach Pat Detmer. “They stuck with it and they’re having more success.” The big test for New Berlin will come in the Woodland Conference later this month when it takes on Wauwatosa on Jan. 25 and then Greenfield and Pewaukee at the Pewaukee Duals on Jan. 28. “That’s going to be the challenge for us,” said Detmer. “There’s some pretty good teams in the Woodland.”
