Ice caves among top winter road trips

- CHELSEY LEWIS MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL

While it’s most people’s instinct to flee south during a Wisconsin winter, don’t overlook the opportunities for a getaway here, says MSN.

While the caves aren’t open yet — Lake Superior hasn’t frozen enough to allow for safe passage to see them — they were a big hit with visitors from around the world when they opened in 2014 and 2015.

If weather conditions are favorable for freezing — cold, little wind and waves — the caves could be accessible in February.

The article also made note of the cross-country skiing opportunities in that part of the state, including the 100-kilometer Birkebeiner trail system between Hayward and Cable.

The famous American Birkebeiner, held Feb. 25, is North America’s largest cross-country ski marathon and attracts more than 10,000 skiers every year.

That’s not all Wisconsin has to offer for roadtrippers.

MSN also included a Wisconsin cheese tour on its list of the best road trips of 2017.

The article made note of the state Department of Tourism’s Wisconsin Cheese Tour, which includes stops at cheese factories and shops such as Fromagination in Madison and Emmi Roth USA in Monroe, whose Grand Cru Surchoix was named the 2016 World Champion at the World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison.

It was the first U.S.made cheese to win the top honor at the contest since 1988.
