Plan calls for new senior housing

Glendale center to require rezoning

- TOM DAYKIN

An assisted living center for senior citizens would replace Glendale’s long-vacant Masonic Lodge under a new proposal.

Irvine, Calif.-based Silverado Senior Living Inc. is proposing the two-story building for a 2.3-acre site at 7800 N. Green Bay Ave.

The triangular parcel, at N. Green Bay Ave. and N. Range Line Road, is now occupied by the former Masonic Lodge.

Mandel Group Inc., which owns the property, in 2006 proposed a 31-unit condominium development at the site. Those plans were dropped after the housing market collapsed, and Mandel is now planning to sell the property to Silverado.

Silverado wants to develop a 54-unit assisted living center, according to plans filed with the city. Most of those units would be for people who need memory care.

The Common Council at its Monday night meeting referred the proposal to the Plan Commission for its review. Silverado wants the city to rezone the property to accommodate the assisted living center.

That commission review is scheduled for Feb. 7.

Silverado operates 37 memory care centers, 10 hospice centers and one nursing home in seven states, including two memory care facilities in Wisconsin. Those are at 1105 Davidson Road, Brookfield, and W128-N6900 Northfield Drive, Menomonee Falls, according to the company’s website.
