Group home resident dies after fall

-

A woman believed to have died after falling from a second-story window at a group home for people with developmental disabilities has been identified in a Milwaukee County medical examiner’s report as Tanya A. Valentin, 36.

Valentin was found shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday outside the home at 4104 N. 63rd St. run by Agape Supportive Living Services LLC, and died at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to the report.

Valentin had Smith-Magenis syndrome and had been living at the home for the past two years, according to the report.

Smith-Magenis syndrome is marked by mild to moderate intellectual disability, delayed speech and language skills, distinctive facial features, sleep disturbances and behavioral problems, according to the National Institutes of Health.

According to the medical examiner’s report, a nurse who had been with Valentin about 5 a.m. stepped out of her room to use the bathroom, heard noises, and returned to find that Valentin was no longer in the room. After checking the home, the nurse returned to the room, looked outside a window she discovered was open, and saw Valentin on the ground below.

Her death is under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department, however there is no indication of foul play, according to a police spokesman.
