Kids will love these, hidden veggies and all

- ANNA THOMAS BATES

Ah, family dinner. Studies show that families who dine together frequently are the best families. They sit around a table, large platters of nourishing food piled high as they recount their days and laugh with one another. Everyone has nice manners, and the conversation is delightful. Here’s my reality: I frequently work at home, so I have the luxury of being home to start a home-cooked meal. But putting that meal together is occurring from 4:30 to 5:30, which is when young children are at their neediest and most annoying. (I’m pretty sure studies show this to be 100% true.)

I’m also convinced my children are colluding to ensure that at least one of them vehemently hates and protests one major part of each meal. And if a child at my house decides not to eat while at the dinner table, he is actively looking for something else to do — and it’s almost always something that drives me crazy.

Between busy schedules, picky children and the distraction of cellphones and tablets, getting everyone to the table at all can be a challenge. And sometimes even if they’re all there, the evening is less than peaceful. But every so often at our house, things click.

The night I made these egg rolls was a good night. My oldest enjoyed helping me fill and fold them, and even my little picky eater liked them. Despite knowing there were lots of vegetables tucked inside that crispy wrapper, he still munched his way through three.

Even though our family dinner is not always a calm picture of togetherness, we are together.
