Gunman killed 4 in ‘domestic incident’

WAUSAU - The man suspected of shooting and killing four people in the Rothschild area on March 22 died of his wounds Saturday morning, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Nengmy Vang, 45, was arrested in connection with a shooting spree that killed four people, including Everest Metro Detective Jason Weiland. Police said the shootings started as a “domestic incident” between Vang and his wife.

Vang targeted his wife in the shooting, according to police, but she escaped unharmed. Her divorce attorney, Sara Quirt Sann, was among the victims. Karen Barclay and Dianne Look, employees at Marathon Savings Bank where Vang’s wife works, also died in the shooting spree.

Police said Vang was severely wounded after he exchanged gunfire with police during a standoff at Aspen Street Apartments in Weston later in the day on March 22. He sustained what were initially believed to be nonfatal wounds, said DOJ spokesman John Koremenos. After more than a week of medical treatment at a hospital, Vang died about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the DOJ.

Vang was the only suspect in the shootings, the DOJ said.

Officers involved in the exchange of gunfire are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation and a review by the DOJ’s Division of Legal

Services, Koremenos said in a news release.

Vang was in the middle of a divorce with his wife, court filings show. Records also indicate Vang had financial problems; he had been sued four times since 2009 for unpaid credit card balances.

The shootings took place at three locations in the Wausau area, starting at Marathon Savings Bank in Rothschild about 12:30 p.m. March 22, where emergency responders were called to a domestic situation and shortly after found two people were shot.

Vang left before police arrived, according to police.

Police were then called about 1:10 p.m. to the Tlusty, Kennedy & Dirks law office in Schofield — where Quirt Sann rented office space.

The spree ended at Aspen Street Apartments in Weston, where police were called about 1:30 p.m. Police were involved in a standoff with Vang; Weiland was shot and killed while establishing a perimeter during the standoff, according to Marathon County Sheriff Scott Parks.
