More new flowers to love

- JOANNE KEMPINGER DEMSKI

Here are more new plants from growers or nurseries:

Shining Moment: This is another plant from Will Radler, a floribunda that blooms nonstop throughout the season and is a slightly fragrant pink-colored rose.

Flowers are cup-like and get about 20 petals. It’s disease-resistant, has glossy dark green foliage and a bushy habit and can get up to 4 1⁄2 feet high.

This plant was available in 2016 as a pre-release through online/mail-order retailers only.

This year it will be available at retail locations. (Star Roses and Plants)

Gilded Sun: A floribunda in a striking yellow non-fading color that is exceptionally disease-resistant. It grows well on its own roots and has large green glossy leaves and medium-size flowers with 18 to 20 petals. It has a bushy habit and gets up to 5 feet tall. (Star Roses and Plants) Fashionably Early Phlox:

This new line of phlox blooms three weeks earlier than normal phlox, and if you cut them back they re-bloom. Colors are Fashionably Early Flamingo, which is a bright pink; Fashionably Early Lavender Ice, which has a white flower with a lavender eye;

Fashionably Early Princess,

which has medium pink flowers; and Fashionably Early

Crystal, a white flower with a light purple eye.

Foliage on these plants is thick, shiny and disease resistant and plants grow 28 to 32 inches tall. As they grow, they will get bigger and will creep and they don’t seed themselves throughout a garden. (Walters Gardens)

Prince Charming: A butterfly bush that is part of the monarch collection, this plant has magenta-colored flowers and is compact for a buddleia. It grows 3 1⁄2 to 4 feet tall and wide, and blooms in late summer to early fall. In addition to attracting monarchs it also attracts hummingbirds and is a pollinator for bees and other insects. (Walters Gardens)

Blue Paradise: This little Blue Stem ornamental grass looks great in a natural landscape. Has a very upright and columnar habit and maintains its upright habit through fall. At 3 1⁄2 feet tall, this grass will be the perfect backdrop to your garden. Has striking silvery blue stems in summer.

In the fall, this grass takes center stage as the leaves develop a deep wine purple color. In early fall, tiny tan seed heads appear on the top half of the stems. Grows to about 2 feet wide. (Walters Gardens)

Blue Skywalker: This taller veronica has a very upright habit but is not a wide plant. It has lavender blue flower spikes, gets 28 to 30 inches high and 18 to 20 inches wide. Although it’s taller than you’d expect from a Veronica, this plant still features a full, dense habit. (Walters Gardens) Stormcloud Bluestar:

This perennial looks like a shrub and has dark charcoal, almost black stems and small star-shaped sky blue/periwinkle flowers that grow in clumps and bloom in spring. After they bloom the plant can be used as a shrub. Gets 24 to 30 inches tall and 30 to 42 inches wide and is deer-resistant. (Walters Gardens) Summer Jazz Fire Trumpet Vine: This trumpet vine is half the size of other varieties and provides fantastic color and screening, without overtaking its space like some other varieties can. It has flame-red blooms within intense orange overtones and blooms nearly non-stop from summer to fall. Will get 3 to 5 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, can be put in containers, and should be planted in full sun. (Monrovia) Sweet Tea Honeysuckle:

This compact evergreen vine has large creamy yellow, pink and white florets that are fragrant and last from spring through summer. Plant to let it sprawl gently along a fence or trellis. Reaches 5 to 6 feet tall and 18 to 30 inches wide. Plant in full to part sun. (Monrovia) Boulevard Parisienne Clematis: A long and prolific season of color is what this flowering vine gives. It has large, pale violet-blue flowers

that emerge from new growth in spring and continue blooming through summer. Its compact, sturdy stems require little tying for support. It’s great for smaller garden beds and can be planted in patio containers. Grows in full to part sun and has twining stems that reach 3 to 4 feet. (Monrovia) Princesse Charlene de Monaco: This is a fragrant hybrid tea in the Romantica line that Haugh describes as a fully double rose in light apricot to shell pink. It has excellent disease resistance for the type and will make a good choice for use as a cut flower. She added that the plant has large 100 plus petals, medium green foliage, grows 5 to 5 1⁄2 feet tall and spreads 2 to 3 feet. (Star Roses) Low Scape Mound

Chokeberry: This hardy aronia stays low growing and tidy in the landscape. Has glossy and dark green leaves that turn brilliant red in fall, edible black fruit and white flowers that attract butterflies and bees. Tolerates sun or shade, most any soil types including wet and dry, and is relatively pest-free. Gets 1 to 2 feet tall and spreads 1 to 2 feet, which makes it a great groundcover or foundation plant. (Nature Hills Nursery) Hydrangea Invincible Wee White: A dwarf Annabelle Hydrangea that is super hardy, this blooms on new wood every year and puts out new flowers from early summer until frost. The stems are strong and the overall size is only 12 to 30 inches high and wide. (Nature Hills Nursery) Devon Cottage Pinball Wizard Dianthus: This plant has double peppermint candy-colored flowers that have flashes of pink and white. Flowers look like small carnations, have a spicy fragrance, strong stems and a neat mounded fine textured foliage that is silvery blue. This plant will keep producing if cut or deadheaded. Grow in a hot dry sunny location for best results. Gets 12 inches high and wide. (Nature Hills Nursery)
