Newgarden rules day at Mid-Ohio

-

Josef Newgarden dominated Sunday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington on the way to his second straight Verizon IndyCar victory at the Honda Indy 200.

Newgarden was not challenged most of the day on the 90-lap, 2.2mile course and finished 5.156 seconds ahead of Team Penske teammate Will Power, the pole-sitter. Newgarden won July 16 at Toronto and has six wins, three this season.

Newgarden moved from fourth to first in the series standings, seven points ahead of Helio Castroneves.

“We had an awesome race. It’s what we needed,” Newgarden said. “This was a good day for Team Penske.”

Local favorite Graham Rahal, who won two years ago, was third for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, and 2016 series champion Simon Pagenaud (Team Penske) was fourth.

Newgarden showed his intentions early when he made an inside pass on Power on the 14th lap. Rahal took a temporary lead when Newgarden pitted on lap 41 but when Rahal

went in the next time around, Newgarden went to the front.

Formula One: Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel overcame steering difficulties to win a tense Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday in Budapest and extend his championship lead over rival Lewis Hamilton to 14 points heading into the summer break.

The four-time Formula One champion made a decent start from pole position, crucially holding off teammate Kimi Raikkonen on the long straight into Turn 1. Chances were limited to catch him after that.

NHRA: J.R. Todd became the first black winner in NHRA Funny Car history Sunday, beating Tim Wilkerson in the Sonoma Nationals in Sonoma, Calif.

The 35-year-old Todd also joined Don Prudhomme as the only NHRA drivers to win at Sonoma Raceway in both nitro categories. Todd won nine time in Top Fuel. Slinger Speedway:

Alex Prunty won a twolap dash to the checkered flag after leaders Steve Apel and Chris Blawat tangled while racing for lead in the super-late model feature.
