PIET’S CONCERT PICK FOR THE WEEKEND

-

RANCID AND DROPKICK MURPHYS

Style: Varying flavors of punk, from Rancid's ska seasoning to the Murphys' Celtic crunch.

Backstory: Rancid was in the right place at the right time, in the early '90s, operating in the same circles as Green Day and the Offspring, the latter inviting the ska-and-Clash-influenced Rancid to open a breakout 1994 tour. In time, Rancid, along with those two bands, earned its place among the leaders of the '90s punk revival. It paid its good fortune forward with Dropkick Murphys, the Celtic-style punk group from Boston. Rancid's Lars Frederiksen discovered the group and produced its first albums, and his bandmate Tim Armstrong gave the Murphys a career-changing record deal with his label in 1998.

Why you should go: Aside from the two-for-one value proposition, both bands have new songs to share from rollicking albums released this year, and have promised that each show on its summer tour will culminate with a joint encore.

Openers: Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers, a punk band that formed in tumultuous Belfast, Northern Ireland in the late '70s; and pop punk band the Bouncing Souls, which like Rancid and the Murphys, emerged in the '90s.

Time and place: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, BMO Harris Pavilion, 200 N. Harbor Dr. Price: $54 at the box office, (800) 745-3000 and ticketmaster.com. — Piet Levy, plevy@journalsentinel.com
