North side apartments planned
Proposal requires zoning change for mixed-use buildings
A mixed-use development is being proposed for a group of buildings on Milwaukee’s north side that was the original location for Briggs & Stratton Corp.
The Community Within The Corridor would feature up to 190 apartments, around 45,000 square feet of space for businesses and nonprofit groups, and two recreational uses: a skateboard park and a putting green.
The development is being proposed by Que El-Amin, who operates Scott Crawford Inc.
El-Amin is seeking a city zoning change for the site, 3212 W. Center St., to accommodate the redevelopment plans.
The project costs could total $60 million if all phases are built, according to the zoning change request filed with the Department of City Development.
El-Amin said Friday he plans to seek federal affordable housing tax credits to help finance the development, which would be a large boost for Milwaukee’s N. 30th St. Industrial Corridor.
Those credits are provided in an annual competition. Developers who receive them must provide apartments at below-market rents to people earning no more than 60% of the local median income.
The building complex is owned by an affiliate of Jonas Builders and has been used for storage. Part of it was built around 1908 for Briggs & Stratton before that company moved to Wauwatosa.
