BOYS CROSS COUNTRY Luke Guttormson, West Bend West:

The Spartans senior won the Slinger Owl Invitation­al on Thursday at Homestead Hollow Park. Guttormson completed the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes 49.28 seconds, almost 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The victory follows a handful of second-place finishes for the two-time state qualifier. He was second at the Jamie Block Invite, Rebel Invitation­al and Arrowhead Invite.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY Kate Sperka, Muskego:

The standout freshman got the best of a field that included a number of the state’s top runners when she took the title at the Muskego Warrior Invitation­al on Sept. 23. She completed the 5,000-meter course at Lake Denoon Middle School in 18 minutes 30.1 seconds. That was about 16 seconds ahead of teammate Kate Jochims, a two-time top-10 finisher at the Division 1 the state meet, and almost a minute ahead of defending Division 1 state champion Meghan Scott of Divine Savior Holy Angels.

FOOTBALL Daniel Carter, Marquette:

The Hilltopper­s needed a pick-me-up after a shutout loss to Brookfield Central on Sept. 27 and Carter provided it Friday. The 6-foot-2, 184-pound running back carried 32 times for 320 yards and four touchdowns in the team’s 35-25 victory over Germantown at home. He scored twice in the first half when Marquette took a 21-0 lead. In the fourth quarter, his 55-yard touchdown shifted momentum back to the Hilltopper­s after Germantown had trimmed that 21-point deficit to three with 51⁄2 minutes left. Carter enters Week 8 with 625 yards in 98 carries, a 6.4-yard average.

GIRLS GOLF Lorenza Martinez, DSHA:

The senior won the regional title at the Menomonee Falls Regional on Wednesday by shooting a 2-under 70 at Silver Spring Golf Club. That was six strokes better than the second-place finishers. The performanc­e helped the Dashers finish second and advance to the sectional meet. It also added to a season in which Martinez earned first-team all-Greater Metro Conference honors. Her 232 total was the third-best score in the league.

GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING Gwen Gustafson, Brookfield Central:

The defending Division 1 state champion won the 50and 100-yard freestyle races at the Lancer Invitation­al on Tuesday. The senior won the 50 in 24.59 seconds and took the 100 in 54.01. She was also part of a 200 free relay that took second in 1 minute 42.44 seconds and a 200 medley relay that took third in 1:56.83.

BOYS SOCCER Michael Miksic, Greendale:

The Panthers senior forward helped the team break through with two victories last week after a string of close losses. He scored the first goal in a 2-1 victory Monday over Pius XI, which is ranked fourth in the Division 3 state poll. He also recorded the team’s only goal in a 1-0 victory over Whitnall on Wednesday.

GIRLS TENNIS Logan White, DSHA:

The Dashers junior didn’t drop a set on the way to winning the Greater Metro tournament title Wednesday at Wauwatosa West. White, who finished fifth at the Division 1 state meet last year, defeated Brookfield East’s Emily Horneffer in the final, 6-4, 6-1. The victories raised White’s record to 19-2 and helped the Dashers win the team title.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL James Althoff, Kenosha Tremper:

The senior outside hitter led the Trojans to a sweep of Racine Park in Southeast Conference play Wednesday and a first-place finish at the Kenosha Indian Trail tournament Saturday. Strong at the net and extremely efficient as a hitter, Althoff finished with 62 kills, a .568 hitting percentage, eight blocks and nine aces to helped the team extend its winning streak to seven.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Mia Grunze, Waterford:

The senior outside hitter led the Wolverines to a 21-25, 25-23, 25-17, 2624 victory over Westosha Central on Tuesday in a showdown of undefeated teams in the Southern Lakes. The Ohio State recruit had a team-high 27 kills with a .278 hitting percentage. She also led the team with 21 digs and was second in serve receive. For the year, Grunze is averaging 5.7 kills per set and is hitting a robust .376.
