Richfield teen Hannah Mrozak aces ‘Voice’ audition

- PIET LEVY

On NBC’s “The Voice” Monday, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine selected the first woman to join his team of aspiring singers this season: Wisconsin teen Hannah Mrozak.

Coaches Levine, Blake Shelton and Jennifer Hudson quickly turned their red chairs around during the Richfield teen’s audition of Hailee Steinfeld’s pop hit “Starving.”

“When I was watching you perform I was thinking … she must be someone’s backup singer,” Shelton said. “She has such comfort on stage. You’re almost oblivious to the chaos you’ve stepped into.”

Mrozak, 18, isn’t a backup singer, but she does have extensive experience. Singing since she was 6, Mrozak’s extensive résumé includes winning the Wisconsin Area Music Industry’s Rising Star award in 2015, the same year she was one of the final 48 contestants on “American Idol.”

An extensive segment on “The Voice” Monday touched on Mrozak’s musical upbringing, her job as an aesthetician, and the tragic suicide of her brother Mason last year.

“My brother would have wanted me to have the greatest time on stage,” Mrozak said on “The Voice” Monday. “He would tell me music is what I was supposed to do. I believe in him and I believe in myself, and I know that this is just the beginning.”

After her performance, Hudson suggested Mrozak had “all those tools that can transcend in the music industry.”

“You can be a really proficient skillful singer but still not have tone,” Levine said. “But because you have both, that’s what really sets you apart.”

Mrozak selected Levine to be her coach, she said, because of his extensive pop experience, predicting he’d be a “good fit.”

“I haven’t had like a tried and true pop singer in a while,” Levine said on the show, adding that if they “find some really, really good songs for her, she’s going to be awesome.”
