WR Adams could be cleared soon

- RYAN WOOD

GREEN BAY – Davante Adams has not yet cleared concussion protocol, but a source said Tuesday there’s a good chance the Green Bay Packers receiver will play Sunday at the Dallas Cowboys.

Adams sustained a concussion last week when he took a late, helmet-to-helmet hit from Chicago Bears linebacker Danny

Trevathan. Adams was sent to the hospital immediately after the hit but was released the next morning and tweeted he was “feeling great” after his discharge.

On Friday, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he had visited Adams and his receiver was in a “rambunctious” mood.

Adams will have to clear the NFL’s concussion protocol to play against Dallas, but he appears to be on track.

“Can’t see him not playing,” a source said Tuesday.

Adams cleared the protocol without missing a game last season — on a short week, no less.

After being concussed against the Cowboy last October, Adams returned to play a Thursday night game against the Bears with only three days of rest. In what might have been the pivotal game of his career, Adams had 13 catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns. His receptions were second only to Don Hutson (14 in 1942) in a single game in franchise history.

McCarthy said he learned of Adams’ availability only six hours before kickoff of that game last season against the Bears.

“That concussion protocol is no joke,” Adams said after that game. “It’s pretty extensive. So I had a lot of stuff to do, even today.”

Perhaps the same pattern could play out this week. Suspension reduced:

The NFL announced it has reduced Trevathan’s suspension to one game for

his hit on Adams.

Trevathan initially was suspended for two games by the NFL because of the vicious nature of the hit, but that penalty was reduced Tuesday to one game on appeal.

Elite opportunity: After first facing Atlanta’s

Julio Jones and then Cincinnati’s A.J. Green, cornerback Kevin King figures to get a third crack at an elite receiver Sunday.

When the Packers travel to play the Cowboys,

Dez Bryant will be waiting. King thanked his coaches when he was assigned to cover Green in his first career start.

What would he tell them if they assigned him to cover Bryant?

“Thanks again,” King said.

King added: “I don’t really got too much to say about that. I think that you guys can kind of tell just by my play and how we’ve been talking, that doesn’t really faze me too much.”

King said he expects a “real physical” matchup against Bryant.

King didn’t start Week 2 against the Falcons, but he got more exposure covering Jones as the game progressed.

Green had 10 catches for 111 yards and one touchdown with King following him on most snaps.

It’s invaluable experience for a rookie corner, the type of matchups King will see if the Packers make the playoffs this season. King said he has enjoyed learning how to cover some of the game’s elite playmakers.

“Those are the kinds of things you figure out as the game goes on,” King said. “I haven’t faced them, but they haven’t faced me yet either.”

Foot surgery: Offensive tackle Kyle Murphy will undergo surgery on his injured foot, according to a league source. The procedure is scheduled for next week.

Murphy played all 70 snaps against the Bengals on Sept. 24 and finished the game despite what turned out to be a significant foot injury. He is one of three offensive linemen on injured reserve.
