Cowboys’ Jones threatens suit
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has threatened to sue the NFL over a proposed contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell, a dispute apparently sparked by star running back Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension over alleged domestic violence, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Jones told the six owners on the compensation committee he had hired high-profile attorney David Boies and was prepared to sue if the group voted to extend Goodell’s deal, the person told the AP. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one has been authorized to reveal details.
Jones also has expressed disapproval with the structure and compensation in the contract extension, another person familiar with the proposed lawsuit says. That person also spoke on condition of anonymity for the same reason.
The actions of Jones were first reported by The New York Times.
All 32 owners voted in May to extend Goodell’s contract and authorized the compensation committee to work out the details. Goodell suspended Elliott in August after a yearlong NFL investigation. Prosecutors in Ohio declined to pursue the domestic violence case.
Vikings activate Bridgewater: The Minnesota Vikings have taken quarterback Teddy Bridgewater off the physically unable to perform list, adding him to the active roster for the first time since he badly injured his left knee during practice more than 14 months ago.
Quarterback Sam Bradford was placed on injured reserve amid conto tinued trouble with his left knee. The moves were made Wednesday, the deadline for a decision by the Vikings at the end of the three-week window that opened when Bridgewater resumed practice with the team.
Honoring Veterans Day: The players union wants everyone in the league to honor a two-minute moment of silence on Sunday in observance of U.S. military veterans.
Former President Barack Obama signed into law the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act in October 2016. The act calls on all Americans to observe a two-minute moment of silence every Nov. 11.
With Veterans Day falling on Saturday this year, the players union voted to ask everyone in the NFL community observe this moment of silence Sunday prior to kickoffs.
The NFLPA said it will work with the league office on logistics to implement the observance.
Bengals shuffle line: The Cincinnati Bengals’ overwhelmed offensive line took another hit on Wednesday when right tackle Jake Fisher went on an injury list, ending his season.
Eric Winston was signed to fill the spot, but it’s unclear how much he can play right away. He’s been out of the NFL since the Bengals released him in the final preseason roster cut.
Cincinnati heads to Tennessee with its season essentially scuttled by the problem everyone else saw coming: An inexperienced line lost its two top blockers in free agency and did little to replace them.
Winston sees specialist: Jameis Winston says consulting orthopedic surgeon James Andrews about his sore throwing shoulder was “standard protocol” and not an indication the injury is worse than he and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers initially believed.
“I’ve known Dr. Andrews for a long time,” the 23-year-old quarterback said Wednesday, a day after traveling to Pensacola, Fla., to visit the renowned surgeon he has known since he was in the sixth grade.
“All the doctors are working together to come up with what they think,” Winston added. “All I know is for the next two weeks I’m going to be rehabbing to get the shoulder 100%.”
The Bucs announced Monday that the third-year pro, who sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder on Oct. 15, will miss at least two games after aggravating the injury during last week’s 30-10 road loss at New Orleans.
