FOOTALL SEMIFINALS

- Mark Stewart

7 p.m. Friday Muskego (9-3) vs. Sun Prairie (12-0) at Arrowhead: With three loses Muskego looks like the underdog, but the Warriors should feel good about their chances. In the last two weeks they beat an undefeated team (Racine Horlick) on the road and then rallied from a 21-point second-half deficit to beat a talented Franklin squad on the road. Sun Prairie beat Kettle Moraine, 38-14, and Kettle Moraine beat Muskego, 21-14, in Week 5. Winning up front will be especially key for Muskego. Sun Prairie's lines are loaded with all-region picks. Waukesha West (12-0) vs. Brookfield Central (12-0) at Oconomowoc: This semifinal pits the teams that finished 1-2 in the Journal Sentinel area rankings. Both squads feature defenses that are arguably the best the schools have had in recent years. Second-ranked Central recorded its sixth shutout last week with its 31-0 victory over Brookfield East. Top-ranked West, meanwhile, allowed only a 66-yard touchdown in a 28-7 victory over previously undefeated Monona Grove. Whitefish Bay (11-1) vs. New Berlin Eisenhower (12-0) at Kettle Moraine: Eisenhower’s defense has been dominant, but Bay presents a unique challenge with its ability to pass the ball – senior quarterback Cade Garcia has 2,408 passing yards – while continuing to run the ball well enough gain almost 2,000 yards. The Lions defense, led by all-region linebacker Mark Shields, perhaps has been even better in the postseason, when it has allowed an average of 179 yards of total offense per game. Martin Luther (8-4) s. Lodi (12-0) at Waukesha North: In order to advance to the final, Martin Luther must figure out how to slow down one of state’s most productive players in the playoffs. Lodi senior Jacob Heyroth has carried 104 times in three playoff games for 1,021 yards to put the Blue Devils on the cusp of the title game for the second time in three years. Martin Luther has a 2,000-yard rusher of its own in Darios Crawley-Reid, who raised his season total to 2,103 yards in 232 carries with a 34-carry, 140-yard performance in a 31-23 win over Two Rivers. Lake Country Lutheran (12-0) vs. Cedar Grove-Belgium (11-1) at West Bend: The Lightning’s last-second comeback victory over Clinton allowed he team to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2013, when it played in Division 7. Who's hot for Lake Country? How about junior linebacker Isaac Simons, who has led the team in tackles in each playoff game. Cedar GroveBelgium’s only loss came to Division 6 semifinalist Fond du Lac Springs.
