Krueger takes oath as federal prosecutor

- John Diedrich

Matthew Krueger is the new top federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.

Krueger took the oath last week after he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate Feb. 15. A former assistant U.S. attorney in the district, Krueger was nominated to the post by President Donald Trump in September.

Krueger took the oath from Chief District Judge William Griesbach on Thursday.

"Our community faces serious problems, including violent crime, too many deaths from opioids, human trafficking, and various fraud schemes. Working together with federal, state, and local partners, we’ll seek to improve the quality of life in eastern Wisconsin,” Krueger said in a news release.

The district covers 28 counties in the eastern portion of the state. Krueger will oversee 77 employees, including 41 attorneys.

Krueger was one of three finalists for the job, emerging from a list supplied by U.S. Sens. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.).

Krueger, who grew up in Milwaukee and Brookfield, has been a prosecutor in the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin since 2013.

He previously was an associate at Sidley Austin law firm in Washington, D.C.

Krueger graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2006, where he served as editor of the Minnesota Law Review.

He later clerked for Judge Paul V. Niemeyer in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.
