SportClub opens downtown on Wednesday

- Carol Deptolla

SportClub, the sports bar by the owner of Nomad World Pub, officially launches on Wednesday at 750 N. Jefferson St.

Although the space, last occupied by Blackthorn pub, will be peppered with TVs for watching games and matches, owner Mike Eitel said the bar’s theme is about the celebration of sports — and TVs won’t necessarily be on if games aren’t being broadcast.

The menu takes its cues from street food from around the world, as well as stadium food in the U.S.: salchipapas ($6.95), the fried hot dog and french fry combination from Latin America, but also a hot dog of the week (price varies).

Other menu items include Korean popcorn chicken ($8.95), pork egg rolls ($5.95), Thai drunken noodles ($9.95), a burger with Swiss, cheddar, bacon and smashed potato tots ($11.95), a house chickpea and lentil burger ($8.95) and shareable mezze platters ($21.95).

At the bar, expect bubbly by the glass and bottle, sparkling-wine cocktails and 30 draft lines for beer.

SportClub has a concession-stand-like counter for quick takeaway meals at lunch and late night.

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday to Friday, and 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday; breakfast will be served 6 a.m. to noon on those soccer match days.
