MU women reach Big East title game

-

Allazia Blockton poured in a careerhigh 32 points to lead the Marquette women’s basketball team to a 76-70 victory over Creighton in the semifinals of the Big East Tournament Monday in Chicago.

The Golden Eagles (23-8) will play DePaul (25-7) in the championship game on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“I just want to say how proud of my team I am,” Golden Eagles coach Carolyn Kieger said. “That was a really fun game to coach, but I've never seen this level of focus in a team that we've had so far at Marquette in those timeouts down the stretch. As a coach, when you see that level of maturity, and you see that look in your eye when you know you're not going to lose the game, that takes a big weight off your shoulders.

“And I thought our team really grew up tonight. We hit adversity. Creighton gave us a great game, a great punch, and we got down there and we weathered the storm and handled the adversity.”

The lead changed 11 times and was tied five times, including at 68 with just 2:01 left to play before Blockton went on a 6-0 run of her own to give Marquette some breathing room with a 74-68 advantage.

Amani Wilborn tallied 16 points and Danielle King added 12 points for the Golden Eagles.

UW-Green Bay 66, Youngstown State 45: Jessica Lindstrom scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to set a program Division I record with 1,000 career boards and the Phoenix reached the Horizon League championship game for the eighth-straight season with a victory over the Penguins in Detroit.

“Lindstrom is arguably the best player that has ever played there,” said Youngstown State coach John Barnes. “She’s by far the best rebounder that’s ever played there. To be able to shoot the three and attack like she does is unbelievable. She can control the game by herself.”

The Phoenix will face No. 3 seed Wright State in Tuesday’s championship game at 11 a.m.

Allie Leclaire added 16 points for topseeded Green Bay (28-3).

MEN

Cleveland State 44, Oakland 43: Kenny Carpenter scored 16 points and the eighth-seeded Vikings (12-22) upset the No. 4 Grizzlies (19-14) in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament in Detroit.
