OSCAR FIRSTS

-

Sunday night’s Academy Awards weren’t exactly filled with surprises — in the major categories, all of the favorites won except “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which had been barely ahead of “The Shape of Water” in most oddsmakers’ charts.

But the Oscars made some history in spite of themselves Sunday night.

Jordan Peele: Although losing out for best picture and director for “Get Out,” Peele won for best original screenplay — the first African-American writer to win in the category.

James Ivory: The veteran filmmaker took home the award for best adapted screenplay for “Call Me By Your Name.” At 89, he’s the oldest winner in Oscars history.

Kazuhiro Tsuji: Tsuji came out of retirement to do the makeup to transform Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour,” and won an Oscar for his work, making him the first Asian individual to win an Academy Award in hairstyling and makeup.

Roger Deakins: Fourteen turned out to be lucky for one of Hollywood’s bestregarded cinematographers. Deakins, who had been nominated 13 times for best cinematography without winning, finally collected the award Sunday night for his work on “Blade Runner 2049.”

Netflix: The streaming service won its first Academy Award last year, for the documentary short “The White Helmets.” But Netflix won its first featurefilm Oscar Sunday for the doping-scandal documentary “Icarus.” It was the streaming service’s only victory Sunday night; it also had nominations for two other documentaries, a foreign-language film (“On Body and Soul”), and four more, including best supporting actress, for the period drama “Mudbound.”
