Stephens win Miami Open

U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens won her hometown tournament, beating Jelena Ostapenko, 7-6 (5), 6-1, in Saturday’s final at the Miami Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Stephens, a South Florida native, won the last women’s final on Key Biscayne. The tournament will move next year to the Miami Dolphins’ stadium.

Ostapenko had a 25-6 advantage in winners but committed 48 unforced errors to 21 by Stephens.

American John Isner goes for the biggest title of his career Sunday when he faces Alexander Zverev in the men’s final.

BOXING

Anthony Joshua was taken the distance for the first time before beating Joseph Parker by unanimous decision and becoming a three-belt world heavyweigh­t champion Saturday in Cardiff, Wales.

Following a fight whose flow was disrupted by the regular interventi­ons of Italian referee Giuseppe Quartarone, two judges awarded it to Joshua, 118-110, and the other made it, 119-109.

Joshua added Parker’s WBO strap to his WBA and IBF titles. Deontay Wilder holds the WBC heavyweigh­t belt.

HOCKEY

The Milwaukee Admirals held a two-goal lead before things got out of hand as the Grand Rapids Griffins ruled the rest of the game and skated to a 6-2 win Saturday at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.

The Admirals were up, 2-0, in the second period after Brandon Bollig notched his 10th goal of the season. But Grand Rapids would score three times before the period was over, taking the lead for good on Ben Street’s goal at 18:25.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Xavier stuck to custom and promoted from within to replace coach Chris Mack, hiring top assistant Travis Steele on Saturday as its 18th head coach.

The move came four days after Mack – a former Musketeer player who is the winningest coach in school history – left to coach Louisville.

The 36-year-old Steele has been an assistant at Xavier for 10 seasons.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

UW-Milwaukee held a one-run lead until Oakland got a grand slam and a two-run homer in the fifth inning and the Golden Grizzlies proceeded to pull away from the Panthers for a 12-7 victory on Saturday in Rochester, Mich.

Zach Nogalski had a pair of hits for UWM (8-16, 4-5 Horizon) and he added a run and an RBI.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Freshman Holly Hestekin allowed just one run on six hits with five strikeouts in leading the Wisconsin Badgers to a 3-1 victory over No. 24 Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.

The Badgers (16-12) got a home run from freshman Taylor Johnson, who also scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

COLLEGE LACROSSE

Junior Grace Gabriel surpassed 100 goals for her career at Marquette as the Golden Eagles routed Temple, 16-4, on Saturday at Valley Fields.

Gabriel scored four times for MU (7-4, 3-0), which had eight different players score at least one goal against the Owls (7-4, 3-1).

Villanova 14, MU 9: John Wagner posted a hat trick for the Golden Eagles on Saturday, but they still fell to No. 7 Villanova at Valley Fields.

Marquette (4-4, 1-1 Big East) also got a pair of goals from Anthony Orsini against the Wildcats (8-2, 1-0).
