WIAA STATE BOYS GOLF CHAMPIONSH­IPS

2017 CHAMPIONS

Division 1: Team – Arrowhead. Medalist – Piercen Hunt, Arrowhead.

Division 2: Team – Madison Edgewood. Medalist – Hunter Pipik, New Berlin West.

Division 3: Team – Fond du Lac Springs. Medalist – Matthew Higley, ElevaStrum.

TEAMS TO WATCH

Division 1: Arrowhead and Marquette have gone back and forth in the rankings the past couple of weeks with Arrowhead reclaiming the top spot in the state rankings following its sectional victory over the Hilltopper­s. The teams have been 1-2 in the state all season

and were 1-2 at the state tournament last year.

Division 2: Edgewood, the state runnerup in 2014, ’15 and ’16 in addition to being last year’s champion, is a big favorite. The Crusaders, ranked No. 3 in the all-division state poll behind Arrowhead and Marquette, won the sectional by 17 strokes over Edgerton and the regional by 32 strokes over Luther Prep.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

DIVISION 1 Jack Anderson, Brookfield Central: The junior, a three-time state qualifier, was the runner-up for Greater Metro Conference player of the year. He posted second-place finishes at the regional and sectional meets and tied for 17th at state last year.

Jack Blair, Marquette: The junior repeated as the Greater Metro player of the year, capping that run by shooting 2-under-par 70 at the 18-hole championsh­ip at Morningsta­r. He tied for 12th and 13th in 2017 and ’16, respective­ly.

Connor Brown, Union Grove: The Broncos junior shot a 5-under 67 at the sectional last week to earn his second

straight state berth. He tied for 34th last year.

Andrew Clement, Pewaukee: The Pirates junior is back at state after a oneyear absence. The Woodland tournament champion shot 2-over at NagaWaukee to win the regional and tied for fourth at the sectional with an even-par 72 at Broadlands. He tied for 13th at state in 2016.

Adam Garski, Wauwatosa: The allGreater Metro selection is making his fourth state appearance with each coming as an individual qualifier. His best showing was a tie for 17th two years ago.

Brett Grulkowski, Franklin: The Sabers senior makes his second trip to state after winning the regional with a 2-over 74 at Brown Deer and tying for 15th at the sectional. He tied for 24th at state last year.

Piercen Hunt, Arrowhead: The defending state champion was the runner-up to teammate Alex Yost in the race for the Classic 8’s player of the year. He arrives at state fresh off below-par rounds of 70 at the regional and sectional.

James Johnson, Greendale: The Panthers

junior, a first-time state qualifier, arrives at state having won regional and sectional titles. He fired a 4-under 68 to win the sectional at Oakwood last week by eight strokes.

Josh Teplin, Homestead: The sophomore will make his state debut. He tied for second at the sectional behind Garski and was the runner-up at the North Shore championsh­ip, firing a 5-over 77 at Whistling Straits.

Alex Yost, Arrowhead: The four-time state qualifier earned the Classic 8’s player of the year honor and then fired below-par rounds in the regional and sectional. His top finish at state was a tie for eighth last season.

DIVISION 2 Alex Pellegrini, Brookfield Academy: The runner-up at the Midwest Classic championsh­ip makes his second straight state appearance after posting third-place showings in the regional and sectional meets. He tied for 11th last year.

Solomon Zarling, Kettle Moraine Lutheran: The East Central tournament champion arrives at his first state appearance fresh off a sectional victory last week. He shot 2-over at Kettle Hills.
