Pitcher, two shortstops from state taken in MLB draft

Former Cedarburg star Jonathan Stiever was one of three Wisconsin players who heard their names called on Day 2 of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday.

The Chicago White Sox selected Stiever in the fifth round with the 138th pick.

Stiever was a first-team all-Big Ten selection as a junior this season pitching for Indiana University, posting a 3.41 ERA while striking out 97 batters in 1001⁄3 innings. A 2015 graduate of Cedarburg High School, he earned all-state honors in both baseball and football.

Owen Miller, formerly of Ozaukee High School, was the first player from Wisconsin taken Tuesday, when the San Diego Padres selected him in the third round with the 84th pick. The Illinois State shortstop led the team with a .384 average and .433 on-base percentage en route to being named first-team all-Missouri Valley Conference as a junior this year.

Miller also played for the Lakeshore Chinooks of the Northwoods League in 2016 and 2017. He hit for the cycle twice in a span of three games for the Chinooks.

Terrin Vavra, a University of Minnesota shortstop who had been a standout at Menomonie High School, also was chosen in the third round. The Colorado Rockies selected him with the 96th pick.

Vavra became the first Gophers player in nine years to earn All-America honors. The junior is hitting .385 with a 1.078 OPS while striking out just 17 times in 200 at-bats.

Waukesha West’s Jarred Kelenic became the highest-drafted high school player ever from Wisconsin when the Mets took him sixth overall on Monday.
