A 36-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 4-year-old boy in a county park restroom after persuading the boy’s mother not to send the child to the women’s restroom.

Daniel Lee Mangert was arrested after he fled the park on a bike after the boy’s mother confronted him.

Mangert is charged with first-degree sexual assault of a child under 12, child enticement and exposing his genitals.

According to the criminal complaint:

The boy’s mother was rushing to get ice for her daughter, who had fallen, when her son needed to use the restroom Sunday at Humboldt Park in Bay View. She was telling him to go in the women’s room when Mangert said he would show the boy the men’s room, and kept persisting.

Finally, the woman let the boy go with Mangert so she could attend to her daughter.

When she returned to outside the men’s restroom, she began calling her son’s name and asked another man who walked out if he’d seen a child inside. He said no, but walked back in to check when the boy ran outside, followed by Mangert.

The woman confronted Mangert, who said he only helped the boy wipe himself. The other man said Mangert told him he was helping the boy wipe his nose. The woman took Mangert’s photo before he fled.

Meanwhile, the boy told his father that Mangert had him stand on a toilet inside a stall and assaulted him, and asked the boy to engage in a sex act with him before the boy’s mother started yelling the boy’s name.

Police found Mangert about two miles away in South Shore Park, where he injured himself jumping from a wall or cliff in an apparent suicide attempt.
