Construction expected to be completed this winter

MOUNT PLEASANT - Workers this week began erecting the walls for the first building on the massive Foxconn project site.

The “multi-purpose” building is located on the southern portion of the site just east of I-94.

Construction is expected to be completed this winter.

It’s the first building to be constructed in Foxconn’s $10 billion Wisconn Valley Science and Technology Park.

About a dozen of the 35-foot prefabricated building panels were lifted into

place Wednesday. A total of 120 panels will be installed for the 120,000-square-foot building.

For months, workers using massive earth-moving machines have prepared the site. Foxconn chose the village of Mount Pleasant as the location of its huge campus last October. Site preparation work began in April.

“Today marks yet another major milestone as the first vertical construction begins on the Foxconn project site,” Racine County Executive Jonathan Delagrave said Thursday.

“Looking around at the companies and people working on this site, you quickly see the state-wide impact of this effort,” Delagrave said in a news release.

“This project represents new jobs and new careers, and we are excited to continue building our community, just as Foxconn continues to build its campus.”

Adam Jelen, senior vice president of Gilbane Building Company, said the project was proceeding in a “carefully planned way that enables us to maintain our Wisconsin First commitment, maximizing the opportunities for Wisconsin businesses and residents.”

Infrastructure work around the site including new water, sewer and roads also is underway.
