THE KILLERS

-

Rock fit for an arena — and an arena's grand opening.

Backstory: The story goes that singer Brandon Flowers once caught his girlfriend cheating on him, but on the bright side, the alleged betrayal led him to write "Mr. Brightside," the Las Vegas band's lead single from its hit debut album, 2004's "Hot Fuss." To this day, it's the band's signature track, but there have been enough hit anthems since — "Somebody Told Me," "When You Were Young," "Read My Mind," "Run for Cover," etc. — to make the Killers one of the few rock bands that broke in the 2000s that's still headlining arenas.

Why you should go: The band played the 3,500-capacity Eagles Ballroom at the Rave just a year ago — an intimate (for them) warm-up gig for a headlining slot at Lollapalooza in Chicago. Tickets were gone in an instant, so here's another chance for fans who missed out to see the band. Although, honestly, the star attraction is the place they're playing: the Milwaukee Bucks' new $524 million arena, the Fiserv Forum. This concert is the venue's official grand opening.

Opener: While the Killers are headlining, the first band that actually will get to perform in the place, fittingly, is one of Milwaukee's own. The Violent Femmes — featuring co-founders Gordon Gano and Brian Ritchie, and newish drummer John Sparrow — went from busking on Milwaukee streets in the '80s to becoming arguably the most influential band that ever came out of the city, thanks to its beloved self-titled debut album and enduring, jittery folkpunk tunes like "Blister in the Sun," "Gone Daddy Gone," "Add It Up" and "Kiss Off."

Time and place: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Fiserv Forum, 1111 N. Phillips Ave. Price: $29 to $103.50 at the box office, (800) 745-3000, (866) 448-7849 and ticketmaster.com. — Piet Levy, plevy@journalsentinel.com
