No. 15 USC 43, UNLV 21: LOS ANGELES – JT Daniels, the second freshman to start at quarterbac­k in a season opener for Southern California, threw for 282 yards with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Daniels was 22 of 35 passing for the Trojans (1-0), with fellow freshman St. Brown making seven receptions for 98 yards. The former Mater Dei High School teammates connected for their first college touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, with St. Brown getting a step behind cornerback Jericho Flowers on a post route to give USC a two-possession lead over the Rebels (0-1). Aca’Cedric Ware rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown, and Vavae Malepeai scored the first of two touchdowns on a 2-yard run late in the second quarter that gave USC a lead it would not relinquish.

California 24, North Carolina 17: BERKELEY, Calif. – Patrick Laird rushed for one touchdown and caught another, California’s defense took advantage of a rocky outing from North Carolina quarterbac­k Nathan Elliott, and the Golden Bears held off the Tar Heels. Cameron Goode scored on a 38-yard intercepti­on return but left in the fourth quarter with a possible leg injury.

Goode’s intercepti­on was one of four by the Golden Bears. Cornerback Jaylinn Hawkins had two.

Washington State 41, Wyoming 19: LARAMIE, Wyo. – Graduate transfer Gardner Minshew threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns as Washington State gained a season-opening win over Wyoming. Minshew, who transferre­d from East Carolina, completed 38 of 57 attempts.

He had TD passes of 2 yards to James Williams, 6 yards to Max Borghi and 7 yards to Easop Winston. Minshew threw one intercepti­on.
