Meyer back on campus

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer returned to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Monday for the first time in a month.

Under the terms of his suspension by Ohio State, Meyer can be on campus, talk to assistants and conduct practice, but he is required to disappear for the 24-hour period surroundin­g the next two games. He’ll be back on the sideline for the Sept. 22 home game against Tulane.

“Coach came back today, we had a meeting early this morning, he met with the players, so things are back to normal,” acting coach Ryan Day said during his news conference. “Obviously he won’t be there for game day, but everything else is back to normal.”

BASEBALL

Adam Wainwright is set to pitch for the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time in nearly four months when he starts Sept. 10 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Wainwright has not pitched since May 13 because of right elbow inflammati­on.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Wisconsin has secured a specialist in its 2019 recruiting class.

Blake Wilcox, a senior kicker and punter from Kettle Moraine High School, announced Monday afternoon he has orally committed to play for the Badgers. The offer from UW is as a preferred walk-on, but Wilcox will likely be on scholarshi­p by his sophomore season, he told the Journal Sentinel.

Tide picks QB: Nick Saban made official: Tua Tagovailoa is the starting quarterbac­k for No. 1 Alabama.

The Tide’s coach didn’t wait for the question to be asked Monday before saying Tagovailoa will start Saturday against Arkansas State. He also said two-year starter Jalen Hurts will still play a role.

Lionel Messi failed to make the world player of the year shortlist Monday for the first time since 2006, with Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah making their first appearance in the final three alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

The women’s player shortlist is headed by fivetime winner Marta of Brazil. The Orlando Pride player is up against Lyon teammates Ada Hegerberg of Norway and Dzsenifer Marozsan of Germany.
