Harrelson works last game

-

He gone. Well, sort of.

Longtime Chicago White Sox broadcaster Ken “Hawk” Harrelson worked his final game Sunday, closing out a colorful TV career after three-plus decades in the booth. The White Sox paid tribute to Harrelson with a pregame video featuring a group of fans ticking off his long list of notable sayings and expressing their gratitude for his contributions to their favorite baseball team.

Asked what he will miss the most, Harrelson responded: “The friendships. That’s what life’s about to me, family and memories.”

The 77-year-old Harrelson, who also played in the majors for nine seasons with four teams and served as Chicago’s general manager for a short time, will be a team ambassador for the 2019 season. He isn’t sure about his future plans beyond that job, and it sounds as if he is still getting used to the idea of a more relaxed lifestyle.

TENNIS

Alabama sophomore Patrick Kaukovalta turned back Virginia Tech’s Henrik Korsgaard, 7-6 (5), 6-1, to win the Milwaukee Tennis Classic’s men’s singles title Sunday at the Al McGuire Center.

The No. 15 seed in the 64-team tournament won all six of his singles matches and is now 8-1 in singles play so far in the fall season.

Purdue’s Silvia Ambrosio, who was seeded fifth, defeated Oklahoma State's Marina Guinart, 6-3, 7-5, for the women’s championship.

AUTO RACING

Robert Hight’s Funny Car engine exploded after he crossed the finish line in a winning final-round pass in the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals in Madison, Ill.

The defending season champion secured the points lead with a 4.036-second run at 276.29 mph against Tim Wilkerson.

Hight got out the car on his own and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He won for the third time this season and 44th overall.

BASKETBALL

Breanna Stewart scored 21 of her 23 points in the second half and A’ja Wilson added 20 to help the United States beat China, 100-88, in the second day of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

The Americans were missing Brittney Griner, who suffered a slight sprain of her right ankle in practice Friday. Griner said after the win over Senegal she would have played if it was an elimination game.

SOCCER

Emily Borgmann and Payton Wesley tallied less than two minutes apart late in the match and the visiting Wisconsin women’s team rallied to beat Michigan State, 2-1, at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing, Mich.

Wesley scored the winner for the Badgers (8-2-1, 2-1-1) on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

Butler 1, Marquette women 0: Anja Savich scored in the 34th minute and the Bulldogs edged the Golden Eagles (2-7-1) in the Big East opener for both teams at Valley Fields.

VOLLEYBALL

Lexi Varga and Ella Francis had nine kills apiece as No. 10 Creighton swept 21st-ranked Marquette at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb.

Allie Barber led the Golden Eagles (10-4, 1-1 Big East) with 16 kills, while Sarah Rose tallied her third double-double of the season with 13 assists and 11 digs.

LACROSSE

Quinnipiac University officials confirmed that the school’s men’s team has been suspended, effectively immediately.

In a statement issued by Lynn Bushnell, the school’s vice president for public affairs, the suspension “prohibits all team activity.”

The team is being investigated for possible violations of the university’s student conduct policy, which touches on everything from underage drinking to abuse.
