Utah State tabs Andersen

Former Utah State coach Gary Andersen has returned to the Aggies.

Andersen previously was Utah State’s coach from 2009-’12. He replaces Matt Wells, who had taken over the Aggies after Andersen’s first stint with the team. Wells was named head coach at Texas Tech last month.

Andersen left the Aggies to take the head coaching job at Wisconsin, then coached at Oregon State for two-plus seasons before unexpected­ly stepping down in the midst of the 2017 season. He served as an assistant at Utah under coach Kyle Whittingha­m last season.

Andersen had a 26-24 record during his first four-year stint with the Aggies and he is 56-61 overall as a head coach.

BASEBALL

Outfielder Andrew McCutchen and the Philadelph­ia Phillies have agreed to a $50 million, threeyear contract, a person familiar with the negotiatio­ns said Tuesday.

The 32-year-old McCutchen was an all-star each season from 2011-’15, topping .300 in batting average from 2012-’14. He was the NL MVP in 2013.

Blue Jays release Tulowitzki: Troy Tulowitzki was released by the Toronto Blue Jays, who owe the oft-injured shortstop $38 million for the remaining two years of his contract.

Now 34, the shortstop has not played in the major leagues since July 2017. He was limited that year to 66 games because of a hamstring and right ankle injury. The ankle required surgery last spring and he missed the entire season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Kansas State hired Chris Klieman of North Dakota State to lead its football program, passing the reins from retired Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder to someone with three Football Championsh­ip Subdivisio­n titles but little Big 12 experience.

Klieman was hired to lead the Bison by current Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor, and was seen as one of the front-runners for the Wildcats’ job ever since Snyder announced his retirement.

Klieman agreed to a six-year contract with a base salary of $2.3 million next season.

SWIMMING

The men’s 400-meter freestyle relay team from the United States set a world record in winning gold at the world short-course championsh­ips in Hangzhou, China.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel, who set an American record on the first leg, gold medalist Blake Pieroni, Michael Chadwick and gold medalist Ryan Held had a time of 3 minutes 03.03 seconds, beating the old mark also held by the U.S. of 3:03.30 set in December 2009.

NBA

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Tristan Thompson could miss a month with a sprained left foot.

Thompson got hurt during Monday night’s 10892 loss in Milwaukee. He made 6 of 7 shots and added six rebounds in 18 minutes before he twisted his foot in the third quarter.

TENNIS

Broadcaste­r and coach Justin Gimelstob faces a felony assault charge following his Halloween night arrest for allegedly attacking a former friend in Los Angeles.

The 41-year-old former pro player is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

Gimelstob was arrested on suspicion of beating Randall Kaplan as they trick-or-treated with their kids. Kaplan said Gimelstob struck him multiple times and threatened to kill him.

A motive for the alleged assault is unknown.
