CAMP REPORT

-

On the field: With Travis Shaw and Hernán Pérez reporting to camp on Saturday, the Milwaukee Brewers are nearly fully represented with only Ryan Braun and Lorenzo Cain having not yet arrived in Maryvale. Position players don’t technically need to report until Monday, though, and manager Craig Counsell certainly isn’t one to hold it against them if they choose not to come in early.

Also, the team completed its first round of bullpen sessions for pitchers while infielder Mauricio Dubon cleared another hurdle in his comeback with some practice slides on his surgically repaired knee. Weather: 61 degrees, partly sunny, windy.

Scoreboard: First Cactus League game, Saturday, Feb. 23 vs. Cubs in Mesa.

Cactus Juice: Shaw knows what teammate Jimmy Nelson is going through, as he and his wife, Melissa, are dealing with a serious medical condition affecting their unborn twins. Shaw’s daughter, Ryann, underwent surgery for a serious heart condition just days after her birth in June of 2017. “I talked to him a little bit up at Brewers On Deck,” Shaw said. “I don’t like to interfere with anybody’s personal stuff, so if he reaches out to me or if he wants to talk, I’m open to talking about it. I’m not going to step in and force my hand.”

Shaw said Ryann has been doing fine since her surgery. He’s also supporting the Heart & Sole 5K run, a fundraiser which takes place on June 22 at Miller Park and is aiming to raise $150,000 to benefit the Pediatric Congenital Heart Association.

Countdown: 39 days until the Brewers’ season opener on March 28 vs. St. Louis at Miller Park.
