Louisville 38, Western Kentucky 21: At Nashville, Tenn., redshirt sophomore quarterback Malik Cunningham directed four first-half scoring drives before leaving in the third quarter following a hit to the head. True freshman Evan Conley finished up and threw a 62-yard touchdown pass on his second throw of the game as the Cardinals (2-1) dominated the Hilltoppers (1-2). Cunningham completed 7 of 10 passes in the first half for 114 yards and two touchdowns as Louisville built 31-7 halftime lead. A 9-yard shovel pass to Tutu Atwell gave Louisville a 7-0 firstquarter lead with 4:18 left. On the Cardinals’ next offensive series, Cunningham and Atwell hooked up again on a 46-yard touchdown throw. Western Kentucky closed to within 14-7 when Steven Duncan found Joshua Simon for a 77-yard TD pass. But the Hilltoppers gave up 17 unanswered points to close out the first half. Miami 63, Bethune-Cookman 0: Jarren Williams threw for 254 yards and three scores, and host Miami gave rookie coach Manny Diaz his first victory. Williams went 19 for 24 without a turnover or a sack, and his scoring passes covered 22 yards to K.J. Osborn, 32 yards to Michael Harley and 1 yard to Larry Hodges. Williams’ longest throw was to Mark Pope for a 54-yard gain, and he departed late in the third quarter. DeeJay Dallas ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns. Miami outgained the Wildcats 590-137 and held them to four first downs. The Citadel 27, Georgia Tech 24 (OT): Jacob Godek kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime, quarterback Brandon Rainey ran for one touchdown and passed for another, and FCS The Citadel stunned host Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech’s defense allowed 320 yards rushing against the triple-option, a scheme it faced in practice the last 11 years under former coach Paul Johnson, but the Yellow Jackets (1-2) still figured to have an enough talent to overcome The Citadel. Instead, the Bulldogs (1-2) never trailed despite having lost at home to Towson and on the road to Elon. Virginia Tech 24, Furman 17: Tré Turner scored second half touchdowns rushing and receiving, helping host Virginia Tech rally past FCS Furman. The Hokies (2-1) trailed 14-3 at halftime, but scored on their first two possessions of the second half to grab the lead. Turner’s 29-yard touchdown run with 5:04 remaining sealed the win. Virginia Tech tailback Keshawn King, making his first collegiate start, rushed for 119 yards. His 54-yard run on the second play of the second half to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by James Mitchell that cut the Furman lead to 14-10. A fumble by Furman’s Devin Wynn on the ensuing possession was costly, with the Hokies converting on Ryan Willis’ 2-yard touchdown pass to Turner with 8:12 left in the third. That score put Virginia Tech in the lead for good.
