Milwaukee rapper makes cut on ‘Flow’

- Piet Levy

A Milwaukee rapper impressed Chance The Rapper on Netflix’s “Rhythm + Flow” — and has made it to the final 30.

Kaylee Crossfire appears at the 19minute mark for the Chicago Auditions episode of the new hip-hop competition series, where she auditioned in front of Chance and guest judges Twista and Royce da 5’9”.

The first four episodes of the series arrived on Netflix Wednesday.

“I like the way you were able to keep it flawless all the way from beginning to end,” Twista said of Crossfire’s rapid-flow, bringing her to tears.

Royce felt Crossfire was “pushing on the gas with the flow” and wasn’t able to pick up on all the lines, but he said he “loved the performance.” And while Chance felt Crossfire’s delivery lacked intimacy, he praised her enunciation and comfort level on stage.

Crossfire will next appear on the “Cypher” episode of “Rhythm + Flow,” on the streaming service Oct. 16, where she’ll perform in front of Chance and fellow judges Cardi B and T.I.

The Netflix appearance comes during a busy year for the local hip-hop scene veteran. Crossfire was selected this spring for Backline, a novel careeradvancement program for Milwaukee musicians supported by WYMS-FM (88.9) and business startup accelerator gener8tor, receiving a $20,000 grant that she used in part to record an EP coming out this fall.
