A new Labor Department tally of job openings should provide insight into the health of the labor market.

The August Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, or JOLTS, is due out today. The survey provides figures for overall hiring, as well as the number of quits and layoffs. Employers advertised 7.22 million available jobs in July. Job openings reached a peak of 7.6 million last November but have fallen by about 400,000 since then.
