SHEBOYGAN - A city garbage truck hit and killed a 9-year-old Sheboygan boy on a bicycle Wednesday morning, according to a Sheboygan Police Department news release.

“It's a very sad day in the city of Sheboygan,” Police Chief Christopher Domagalski said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Domagalski said the truck was traveling northbound on 14th Street about 10:30 a.m. and was making a turn east on Center Avenue. The boy was traveling north on the sidewalk, he said. He died at the scene.

The garbage truck was driven by a 35-year-old man who has worked for the city for about two years, according to police. A 55-year-old man who has been employed by the city for more than 20 years was collecting trash from the back of the vehicle.

“We're grieving along with the family,” David Biebel, Sheboygan's director of public works, said. Biebel's department is responsible for the city's trash collection.
