Eaux Claires returns in November, July

- Piet Levy

After taking the summer off, Eaux Claires, the boutique music festival co-created by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and the National’s Aaron Dessner, is coming back sooner than expected.

The festival announced a special fall edition, Eaux Claires Hiver, happening Nov. 21 to 24 — and plans for the fifth Eaux Claires to return in July.

Hiver, which organizers joked in a press release they didn’t know how to actually pronounce, will include a series of performances Nov. 22 and 23, dubbed “37d03d,” named after an artists collective co-launched by Vernon. The events will highlight visual art, literature and music created earlier in the week. Participants include Vernon and Dessner, plus Ani DiFranco, author Michael Perry, Eau Claire singersongwriter and Bon Iver drummer S. Carey, and 16 others.

Hiver will kick off Nov. 21 with a conversation between Vernon and DiFranco, at the Pablo Center at the Confluence. The Pablo Center also will host performances of “Come Through” Nov. 22 to 24, a collaboration between Vernon and TU Dance, featuring choreographed performances set to Vernon’s music.

Tickets are already on sale for “Come Through,” priced between $42.50 and $125, available at pablo

center.org. Tickets are $30 to $100 for the Vernon and DiFranco conversation, and $80 for the “37d03d” performances. They’re available beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at pablocenter.org.

Only 500 tickets will be sold for the “37d03d” performances.

Dates and additional details for the July edition of Eaux Claires have yet to be announced, but last year, organizers said the festival would not return to the same location in Eau Claire County where the festival was held every summer from 2015 to 2018. The eclectic lineup and exclusive events during those years included Bon Iver’s debut performance of their “22, A Million” album; all-star tributes to the Grateful Dead and John Prine; and a one-timeonly collaborative performance of Paul Simon with classical chamber group yMusic.
