Glorioso’s Appetito offers new cooking classes

- Carol Deptolla

Learn how to cook risotto or ravioli with a springlike filling, plot out a pleasing cheese board or let your (older) kiddos learn to bake the Italian way in classes at Glorioso’s Appetito, on the lower east side.

Appetito is the cooking school and event space by Glorioso’s Italian Market. It’s in the market’s original location, at 1020 E. Brady St.

The upcoming classes are hands on, and most of the two-hour or so class time is spent standing (professional chefs lead the cooking classes):

Feb. 16 — Family Fun: Rustic Italian Baking. Aimed at children 8 to 16 years old, the class will show them how to bake sweet ricotta cookies and their choice of Italian bread, grissini or focaccia, which the bakers will be able to take home.

The class, which starts at 1 p.m., is $65 a person; a parent or guardian must attend and buy a ticket, as well.

Feb. 22 — Italian Basics: Risotto. Learn how to make this creamy rice dish, which originated in northern Italy. The class starts at 5:30 p.m. and is $65.

April 3 — Spring Cheese Boards with Carr Valley. Learn how prominent cheesemaker Carr Valley from La Valle makes its cheeses, sample four to six varieties and then build a cheese board in pairs to take home. The class is at 5:30 p.m. and is $35.

April 18 — Making Fresh Pasta: Spring Ravioli. In this class, students will pair up to learn how to make pasta dough from scratch and will fill the ravioli with spinach and artichoke. The class, which meets at 1 p.m. and lasts until 3:30 or so, is $65.

Tickets are available online at shop.gloriosos.com/collections/ events.

Appetito classes sell out quickly; they’ve been popular since the event center opened a year ago. But new classes are added intermittently, and they’re announced in the event newsletter (sign up for the newsletter at the website, gloriosos.com/appetito ).
