MU’s Howard honored
Marquette star Markus Howard was named to the USA Today's first team All-American squad on Monday.
Howard averaged 27.8 points and shot 41% from three-point range this season.
Obi Toppin of Dayton, a 6-9 athletic forward, was named as the player of the year. He was the face of a 29-2 Flyers team that went undefeated in Atlantic 10 play and only lost in overtime. Toppin averaged 20 points and 7.5 rebounds a game.
Oregon guard Payton Pritchard, Kansas center Udoka Azubuike and Iowa center Luka Garza rounded out the first team.
Brian Dutcher, who led San Diego State to a 30-2 record, was named as the coach of the year.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Kansas was voted the No. 1 team in the final USA Today coaches poll, retaining the spot it held for the past three weeks while games were still being played.
It wasn't quite unanimous for the Jayhawks, however, as they received 29 of 32 first-place votes. Gonzaga, one of the few teams that was able to complete its conference tournament with a championship, will finish at No. 2 claiming the remaining three first-place nods.
Atlantic-10 regular-season champ Dayton, Big 12 runner-up Baylor and ACC regular-season champ Florida State round out the top five.
Wisconsin was ranked 19th.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Brown made college football history by promoting Heather Marini to quarterbacks coach, making her the first female position coach in Division I history.
Marini served as the offensive quality control assistant coach for the Bears last season. She was previously a summer scouting specialist for the NFL's New York Jets.
In her new position, Marini will work with EJ Perry, who led the nation for total offense in 2019, setting an Ivy League record and finishing as a finalist for the conference Player of the Year award.
NBA
Dallas Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson had surgery for a right shoulder injury that had sidelined him for three weeks.
The team said that Brunson underwent the procedure on his labrum in Dallas. There is no timetable for his return.
Brunson was injured in the first quarter of a 111107 loss at Atlanta on Feb. 22.
