Betty Hawkins Swinford, 93, died peacefully on May 27, 2020. Loving wife of Norman Swinford (deceased), beloved mother of David (Bonnie), Ann (Mo El-Fouly), Mark (Jill, deceased) and Paul (Angela) Swinford, and grandmother of Jessica, Matthew, Eric and Luke Swinford and 9 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her son Douglas Lynn, parents Stanley and Ella May (Watt) Hawkins, brothers Harry Jack and Eugene Hawkins. Betty received her BS in Social Work from Butler University in 1946 and her Master of Social Work from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee in 1973 and worked as a psychiatric social worker. By returning to school to get her Masters’ degree in mid-life, she was able to provide her children their college educations, which she considered her greatest accomplishment. Betty volunteered for Interfaith Services, visiting shut-ins and providing transportation for the elderly until she was 92. She was an active longtime member of Greendale Community United Church of Christ. Her final contribution to society was as an anatomic donor for the Medical College of Wisconsin. She had a dry sense of humor and once read an obituary that she wanted quoted here, “She kept her sons warmly dressed and she didn’t like to iron.” We are able to confirm this. She will be laid to rest with her husband and son in Indiana. In lieu of flowers, donations t o Greendale Community United Church of Christ (www.greendalecommunitychurch.org) or Zilber Family Hospice (https://www.aurorahealthcare.org/locations/home-care/aurora-at-home-zilber-family-hospice)or the charity of your choice will be appreciated.
