Lavelle joins Man City

World Cup-winning United States midfielder Rose Lavelle signed for Manchester City on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old Lavelle played the last two years with the Washington Spirit, though her future National Women’s Soccer League rights were traded over the weekend to the OL Reign ahead of her move to England.

Lavelle, a former University of Wisconsin star, had a standout World Cup last year in France. She earned the Bronze Ball as the tournament’s thirdbest player and scored the Americans’ second goal in the 2-0 win over the Netherland­s in the final.

She joins a Man City team which finished second last season in the Women’s Super League.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunit­y of playing in England and competing in the Champions League,” Lavelle said.

BASEBALL

Texas rookie pitcher Ian Gibaut was suspended for three games Tuesday, a day after he threw a fastball behind San Diego’s Manny Machado following a grand slam in a dust-up over baseball’s unwritten rules.

Gibaut appealed the penalty imposed by Major League Baseball and was active for Tuesday’s game against the Padres.

NBA

The Celtics said forward Gordon Hayward will be sidelined for around four weeks after suffering a severe right ankle sprain in Boston’s Game 1 win over Philadelph­ia in their first-round playoff series.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of the Celtics’ 109-101 victory Monday night when he went up for a rebound and rolled his ankle as he landed on teammate Daniel Theis’ foot. He limped to the locker room and didn’t return.

HOCKEY

Dale Hawerchuk, a hockey phenom who became the face of the Winnipeg Jets en route to the Hall of Fame, has died at the age of 57 after a battle with cancer.

A teenage star, Hawerchuk was drafted first overall by the Jets in 1981. He went on to play nine seasons in Winnipeg and five in Buffalo before finishing up his distinguis­hed 16-year NHL career with stints in St. Louis and Philadelph­ia.

Hawerchuk had 518 goals and 1,409 points in 1,188 regular-season games.
